What did Ahmet Bey know that made his voice change so suddenly?
Inside, Ahmet Bey sits at the table and folds his hands, saying nothing for a while, as if choosing his words carefully.
This tower, he finally says, has lit up only once before.
Forty years ago.
He pauses.
The morning after that night, someone disappeared from this city.
The room goes quiet.
Who?
Nail asks.
Ahmet Bey gets up and walks to a shelf, pulling out an old, yellowed file.
A journalist, he says.
He was investigating something about the city, something he was never able to finish.
He was never seen again.
He sets the file on the table but doesn't open it.
And now the tower is burning again.
Büşra looks at the photo, then back at him.
Something about the way he speaks makes her feel as if he's leaving something out.
We should call Elif Teacher too, Lena says quietly.
Ahmet Bey looks up.
For a moment, he simply studies her, then nods.
Yes, he says.
You should.
No one asks why.
Somehow, it doesn't feel like the right question yet.
Büşra picks up her phone, her fingers hovering over the screen.
She wonders, briefly, what it would feel like to walk away from all of this.
She wonders what it would feel like to pretend the message had never arrived.
But she doesn't.
She calls Elif instead.
The phone rings twice before Elif answers, her voice calm, almost as if she'd been expecting the call for years rather than minutes.
Can we come by?
Büşra asks.
It is about the old tower.
There is a short silence on the other end, the kind that says more than words could.
Of course, Elif finally says.
I'll put the coffee on.
The line goes dead.
Büşra lowers the phone slowly, unsure why her hands are trembling.
She didn't even ask what happened, Nail says.
No, Ahmet Bey agrees quietly.
She didn't need to.
What is Elif Teacher hiding?
And why did she sound as if she had been waiting all along?
