Level 14 - The Light in the Old Library

Büşra lives with her family in a quiet town where nothing unusual usually happens.
Every Saturday she gets up early, drinks a cup of tea with her parents, and reads an English book before breakfast.
She used to translate every sentence into Turkish, but now she enjoys reading without stopping.
"I think I'm getting better every week," she often says.
This Saturday is different.
Hena is preparing breakfast while Vefa is reading the newspaper.
Lena is writing a message to Nail, and Büşra is helping her mother.
"Could you turn on the kitchen light?" Hena asks.
"Of course," Büşra replies. "I can do that."
Suddenly, Vefa looks up.
"The old library will open today after many years," he says.
"I heard that a strange room was discovered there last week."
Everyone becomes curious.
After breakfast they leave home and go to the library by bus.
Nil comes from the next street and joins them.
Meanwhile, Nail is already waiting at the entrance.
"I'm afraid we're late," he says.
"No," Lena laughs. "We are early enough."
The library, which had been closed for years, looks different.
The walls have been painted, the windows have been cleaned, and hundreds of books have already been returned to the shelves.
Ahmet Bey welcomes them.
He says, "A small room was found behind an old bookshelf yesterday."
Then he adds, "Nobody knows who built it."
The children look at each other.
"This might be interesting," Büşra whispers.
Inside the library there is a wooden door that nobody remembers.
Above it hangs an old clock whose hands stopped at exactly nine o'clock many years ago.
At first, everyone simply looks around.
However, Büşra notices something unusual.
One book is lying on a table although nobody has borrowed it yet.
The cover is covered with dust.
"The book looks older than the others," Lena says.
"I wish I could read its first owner's name."
Ahmet Bey smiles.
"My grandfather used to work here," he says.
"He told me that this book had never been opened."
Then he pauses.
"He also said that strange lights would appear on rainy evenings."
Everyone becomes silent.
Outside, the sky is getting darker.
Meanwhile, rain is beginning to fall.
"If it rains harder, we will stay here a little longer," Vefa says.
Nobody objects.
Büşra carefully opens the old book.
Inside, she finds a handwritten note.
It says:
The truth is hidden where the oldest light still shines.
Nobody understands it.
Nail looks for another clue while Nil is taking pictures.
Lena is speaking quietly with Ahmet Bey.
Hena is waiting near the window.
Vefa is reminding everyone not to touch anything carelessly because the books must be protected.
Suddenly, the lights go out.
Only one small lamp remains on.
It was placed above an ancient map that had been forgotten for decades.
The map points to another bookshelf.
"Either Lena or Büşra should check it," Vefa says.
"I'll go," Büşra answers.
She walks slowly toward the shelf.
The shelf is too heavy to move alone.
Fortunately, Nail comes to help.
Together they push it.
Behind the shelf they discover another small door.
The room behind it is warm enough to enter.
Inside there is only a wooden desk and a letter.
The letter begins:
If you have found this room, you already love books more than fear.
Everyone smiles.
Büşra decides to read it aloud.
She enjoys reading, and the others enjoy listening.
The letter explains that many years ago the librarian hid rare books there to protect them during difficult times.
Therefore, the secret room was never mentioned again.
Ahmet Bey becomes emotional.
"My grandfather once told me about a hidden room," he says.
"I never believed him."
Then he says that he will donate the letter to the library museum so everyone can read it.
By that time, the rain has stopped.
The sun shines through the old windows.
The mysterious room no longer feels frightening.
In fact, it feels peaceful.
Before they leave, Ahmet Bey gives Büşra a small notebook.
"The notebook was written by my grandfather," he says.
"You should keep it for a while."
Büşra thanks him.
She promises that she will return it next week.
If she finds another clue, she will tell everyone.
If she had ignored the old book, they would never have discovered the hidden room.
On the way home everyone talks excitedly.
Neither Nail nor Nil can stop smiling.
Either Lena or Büşra is always telling another part of the story.
"This was the most interesting day we have ever had," Lena says.
"It was better than I expected," Nail replies.
"It was certainly more exciting than last weekend."
When they arrive home, Hena cooks dinner while Büşra writes everything in her diary.
She has already written three pages, but she still feels there is more to say.
She finishes writing just before bedtime.
Before she closes the notebook, she writes one last sentence:
I used to study English because I wanted good grades.
Now I study English because every story opens another door.
She turns off the light.
Outside, the rain has stopped.
Inside, a new adventure has already begun.
